After the case is developed and printed, training is offered to teachers to show them how to use constitutional case materials in their classrooms and give them instruction in methods of preparing students to present mock trials. Teachers receiving instruction about case materials learn how to work with legal volunteers, with the option of entering a team in statewide, academic competition. The Mock Trial competition gives high school students, who have been studying about the Constitution and legal system, an opportunity to participate in a hands-on simulation which develops their critical thinking skills. This program is available to all public, private and independent high schools in Louisiana, and state finalists have represented rural, inner-city, suburban, and small town areas across the state. A great deal of community interest is generated through student participation in the competition, which requires partnership with a local attorney as a legal advisor and performance before a judicial panel comprised of a judge and two attorneys. It is hoped that students who have used mock trial materials will become informed and active citizens of the future with new respect for the laws upon which our democracy is based. |
